Can All Women Have a Homebirth?

Ask the Midwife: Can all women have a homebirth and do you encourage all women to do so?

First and foremost, I believe in a woman’s right to be empowered, informed and supported in however she chooses to birth.

Now, I promote a homebirth model of care. This means that we support physiologic birth without disturbance when all is well; we do things as naturally and holistically as possible, without intervention unless medically necessary. The care is sensitive, kind, personalized, family centered and evidence based. The setting is as close to home as a woman desires, and most importantly, a woman feels supported, heard, and her choices respected.

Our Gentle Home Water Birth

Our baby’s birth is an answered prayer.

I was in great physical pain for days but, incredibly, there was never a doubt in my mind. I had faith that we could do it.

I was at home, surrounded by my family – the people who love me most, by caring midwives dedicated to give me a safe, gentle, positive birth experience, and a sweet lady who documented the whole thing in these beautiful photos.

The Birth of Cassian Alder

Intuition. There were a few things that I hadn’t fully grasped with my firstborn’s Birth…Primarily, learning to tap into my own innate wisdom, and just fully trusting myself, my body and my Baby, and our God-designed interconnectedness. This was the recurring theme of this entire Pregnancy and Birth, and it is a skill that I am practicing and trying to grow ever since. Modern culture has largely severed all connection with our built-in ability to intuit what we need and what the best course of action is.

Ethan's Birth Story

The Birth of Mobi

My pregnancy was from mid December 2014- September 22 2015. I had little to no morning sickness and stayed fairly active throughout the 40 weeks. I only drank water (tons of it) and pregnancy safe teas. I kept a vegetarian diet. I used raw shae butter on my belly and ended up with not one stretch mark (wow..). I was very lucky to have the support of my partner Aaron, which allowed me to not work the entire pregnancy so I could focus on sending loving energy and food to our little one. During the last 2 months, we began taking Hypnobabies courses from our beautiful doula.
